Hey Guys! Welcome back to my channel! I made this video because as a veterinarian I see a lot of new puppies and worried owners dealing with hypoglycemia. That means low blood sugar. Hypoglycemia occurs in puppies that cannot properly store sugar until they are older. This is most commonly seen in Maltese, Yorkie, Shitzu and other toy breeds. What happens when a puppy gets low blood surgery is they become weak, lethargic, collapse and can have seizures. This is very scary for new puppy owners. Treatment includes rubbing sugar onto their gums or feeding them an oral sugar supplement. Sugar supplements that you can use include 1) Regular grain surgar mixed with water 2) honey 3) Nutrical supplement form your veterinarian 4) Karo syrup and you can use 5) Maple syrup last resort. Hypoglycemia puppies need to be fed small meals 4-6x a day and given small amounts of sugar supplements (a dime size amount on your finger or 0.5 ml) every 4 hours. Most puppies will only need this supplementation for the first 6 months of their lives. If you're puppy is struggling with hypoglycemia please bring your puppy to the vet and have them help you! Thank you and I hope this video helps everyone with their small puppies! ~ Dr. Lindsay
