The 2014 study discussed the effect of a natural sweetener from guava plant to aid in weight loss and reduce blood glucose levels. Known as agavins, the plant-based sweeteners slow the stomach from emptying, boosting insulin production. They’re also non-digestible, which means they act as a dietary fiber but can’t elevate a person’s blood sugar. “We have found that since agavins reduce glucose levels and increase GLP-1, they also increase the amount of insulin,” said López, Ph.D. GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone that slows the stomach from emptying, thereby stimulating production of insulin. She added, “Agavins are not expensive and they have no known side effects, except for those few people who cannot tolerate them.” So why did I spend this time talking about the guava plant. Well, some of you probably know this, but tequila is made from the guava plant.
