Understanding The Link Between Blood Sugar And Thyroid Health | Dr Ben Galyardt | Ep 101 [e8999b]
2025-09-13Understanding Blood Sugar Fluctuations: Separating Fact from Fiction
Maintaining a stable blood sugar range is crucial for overall health, and one common myth that often arises in this context is whether insulin can raise blood sugar levels. The short answer is yes, but there's more to it than just a straightforward "yes" or "no." To delve deeper into this topic, let's explore what causes fluctuations in the first place.
The Complex Relationship Between Insulin and Blood Sugar
Insulin plays a pivotal role in regulating blood sugar levels by facilitating glucose uptake into cells. However, insulin resistance - where cells become sudden increase in blood sugar level less responsive to insulin - is common among people with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. This condition leads to increased production of insulin as the body tries harder to manage blood sugar, often resulting erectile dysfunction high blood sugar in even higher blood sugar readings over time.
When the pancreas produces excess insulin due to dietary choices that are high in refined carbohydrates and added sugars, it can indeed raise blood sugar levels further for several reasons:
- Insulin Overload: If there's more glucose entering cells than they can handle because of excessive insulin, the body may not be able to process all this extra glucose quickly enough. As a result, excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream.
- Increased Glucose Production: When the body senses low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), it signals for more glucose release from stored glycogen and also prompts liver cells to convert fat into usable energy through gluconeogenesis - producing additional glucose that can raise blood sugar levels.
To further complicate matters, insulin has another critical role. In a healthy individual with functional pancreatic beta-cells (responsible for insulin production), high physiological needs such as exercise demand more fuel in the form of increased glycogenolysis and de novo lipogenesis – increasing overall endogenous glucose release that can lead to higher beta blockers and low blood sugar blood sugar readings during these periods even without added exogenous glucose intake.
This delicate balance makes it challenging to pinpoint whether "insulin" alone raises or lowers blood sugar.
We often hear terms like blood sugar, insulin resistance, diabetes but what has this got to do with thyroid health?
